Elements and Modalities

The 12 Zodiac signs are divided and divided again to create a unique mix of modalities and elements for each sign.The first division of the Zodiac signs is by element. There are four elements - Fire, Earth, Air and Water. There are 3 Zodiac signs which fall into each element. The second division of the Zodiac is by modality. There are three modalities - Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable. There are 4 Zodiac signs which fall into each modality. This means each Zodiac sign is a unique combination of Element and Modality. Read on to find out more.

Elements

The elements describe the physical expression of the Zodiac signs. The four elements are the basis of all matter and the building blocks of the natural world. Like a single seed that requires heat, water, oxygen and soil to thrive the Zodiac is built upon an equal mix of these essential compounds. Each Zodiac sign is described according to one element. Understanding the elements gives you a "first glance" understanding of the Zodiac signs themselves.

The elements also represent four key psychological functions. To understand the Zodiac signs in full, we'll look at the elements from both physical and psychological perspectives. The elements reflect primary functions of our mental/spiritual existence. We need passion and action (Fire) to motivate and inspire us; we require practicality (Earth) to keep us grounded, logic and intellect (Air) to provide us with information and facts, and feelings and emotions (Water) to connect us.

Fire and Air signs are Yang/ Masculine. They are expressive, social and extroverted. Earth/ Water are Yin/ Feminine. They are private, introspective and reflective. The Element a person's Sun sign falls into shows the primary motivating force of that individual.

When thinking of a person's Sun sign (or any other planet), the elements provide a great starting block to begin decoding the language of Astrology. To help you fully understand the Elements, take a moment to make a few notes before reading ahead. Think of a "fiery" person you know. What kinds of words would you use to describe them? What colours or energies do you start to pick up on? Now think of a friend you would describe as "earthy". How would you describe them? What words, colours and images come to mind?

Now think of someone you know who is "airy" or an airhead. How do you picture them? What colours and words do you envisage? And finally think of a "watery" person. What kinds of words and images do you pick up on? Make some notes on what your initial interpretation is of each element before reading ahead.

Water: FEELING

The Water Element corresponds to the FEELING or emotional function. Watery types are motivated by what they feel rather than logic or practicality. Feelings are paramount and considered in all decisions. Following intuition and inner knowings is important to the water signs. Water signs are aware of the emotion or feeling in their environment and those around them. They are moody and dreamy, sensitive and caring. Sharing feelings and connecting through emotion is very important to the Water signs.

Modalities

The next division is by modality of the Zodiac signs. There are 3 modalities - cardinal, fixed and mutable. These relate to the "modes of operation" for each sign. One sign from each element falls into each modality.

Cardinal Signs are signs that actively seek or initiate change. Cardinal signs are concerned with survival - of themselves (Aries), their tribe (Cancer) their partners (Libra) and their position in society (Capricorn). Cardinal signs are action orientated and quick to respond to changes in circumstance. They take action as and when it's needed to ensure basic needs are met and protected. Cardinal signs are known for their ability to initiate and get things started. Cardinal signs are instinctive and motivated by primal drives. The Cardinal signs mark the turning points in the seasons. March, June, September and December are months when the season changes in response to the Sun reaching key points in the sky. As the Sun brightens and dims through the year we physically undergo a shift in light and warmth here on Earth. When the Sun moves into Aries and Libra it's the Equinox (equal day/ night) and the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn. As the Sun moves into Cancer and Capricorn it's the Solstice (longest day/ night) and the primary seasons of summer and winter.
The 4 cardinal signs reflect the basic needs of humanity - to hunt (Aries), to procreate (Cancer), to relate (Libra) and to achieve (Capricorn).

Fixed Signs represent the middle of the seasons where life continues in familiar form. The Sun moves through the fixed signs in the middle of each season. Fixed signs are averse to change and prefer continuity. These signs see the value in "reaping what you sow" and seek to build success and safety through building on past successes. By their nature, fixed signs resist change and seek to repeat tried and true habits. Some of their mottos are likely to be: "This is the way I have always done things. Why would I do it differently?" "That has always worked for me." Fixed signs crave security and stability. Fixed signs are stubborn, reliable and dependable. After the basic needs of survival have been meet (Cardinal signs), it's time to build on what you have. Think of cardinal signs as nomadic - moving to where the food or shelter is. The fixed signs are aligned with agricultural and farming principles.
A strong dislike of change marks the fixed signs of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius.

Mutable signs carry the blueprint for change. Mutable signs prefer the fluidity of life constantly in flux. Mutable signs are open to new ways of being, doing or thinking. When the Sun passes through the mutable signs (February, May, August and November) we are in the final month of a season. Mutable signs carry an inherent awareness that change is a natural part of life. Mutable signs are fluid and flexible, easily adapting to new situations. These signs easily adapt and are quick on their feet. Mutable signs are the chameleons of the Zodiac and are naturally curious. Mutable signs are ready to move on at a moment's notice making them subjective and easily led.
The mutable signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius & Pisces.

Three people are sitting in a room. It's hot outside and the air conditioner has broken. The cardinal sign grabs the tool box and attempts to fix the air conditioner. The fixed sign stews about how this isn't meant to happen, the machine should still be working. The mutable sign opens their shift collar and thinks "a least I won't catch a cold."

Mercury Retrogrades for 2008

Mercury appears to move backwards at 3 different periods throughout 2008. In 2008 the emphasis from Mercury's retrogrades is on the air signs/ element. Mercury Retrograde is traditionally a time to hold off signing important documents or contracts. Instead take time to review or rethink major decisions. It's a time for reflection and research.

You'll think about new directions relating to all areas of your life including friends, relationships, career, money and family, but avoid making any choices until Mercury returns to forward movement again. Each Mercury Retrograde last for about 3 weeks. Of course, you can expect all the usual hiccups, like having to reschedule plans at the last minute, rearrange your diary or life and deal with misunderstandings or crossed wires due to a communication breakdown of some sort.

Transport and communication are two areas which typically suffer during Mercury Retrogrades. Double check computer back ups, make copies of everything important that you're working on and be prepared for mobile dropouts, and delays with travel. That said, it is a good time to be on holidays - just make sure everything is organised before Mercury goes backwards.

The reason for all this confusion and chaos around communicating during Mercury retrograde is because communication tends to be emphasised when Mercury is going in reverse. With everyone trying to do more all at the same time mistakes and misunderstandings will happen. 

You'll be most affected by Mercury retrograde effect if it falls in your sign. As they are ruled by Mercury, Geminis and Virgos are always challenged through these periods.

Shadow Periods
Right before and immediately after a planet goes retrograde it moves through the part of the Zodiac/ sky that it will be or has just been moving in reverse through. This is the shadow area. Ie If Mercury will be retrograde from 25 Aries back to 10 Aries, the period where it covers the space from 10 Aries to 25 Aries while moving forwards is it's shadow. This happens in the lead up the retrograde and right after. The shadow period occurs right before and just after the retrograde itself. Because Mercury (or any other planet), is covering "tainted" ground at this time it's said to be still a little off and not at it's strongest.

Your Secrets Revealed: How The Stars Reveal Your Destiny

Your Astrology Chart (birth chart) is a snapshot of the sky taken at the moment you were born, looking up at the sky from the place on Earth at which you arrived. Astrologers use a combination of planets, signs and houses to determine your destiny. Planets are like characters in a play; they act. Signs are like the clothes a character in a play wears; they tell us about the character. Houses are like the set on stage; they show where in life action is happening.

An Astrologer will draw up or print out (as it's done these days) this sky map of your birth. To do so they will need your time, date and place of birth. The birth chart is a unique tool for self discovery.

Your birth chart can tell you:

*your strengths and weaknesses
*what turns you on sexually and physically
*the types of relationships you'll attract
*the relationship style that works best for you
*what your purpose is in life
*what type of career most fulfils you
*how you earn and spend money - and how to save

When you first look at your birth chart it looks like a big circle with 12 sections (the Houses) full of hieroglyphics. The symbols on the outside of the circle are the Zodiac signs. The symbols on the inside of the circle are the planets.

Astrology is a simple art of learning symbols and then putting them together. Think about when you are driving. You recognise signs for roundabouts, no left or right turns, slippery when wet etc. You are using symbols to understand a concept, instruction or direction. Astrology is a lot like driving. Look at the symbols, learn what they mean, then follow the directions.

Houses

Houses are segments of the chart. Each House represents a different area of life. The House a planet falls in shows where in life you express and meet that planet's energy.

If you look at an Astrological Chart you'll see a horizontal line directly through the middle - the Ascendant line. The Ascendant is the left point on this horizontal line. The First House starts at the Ascendant. The Houses then move anti clockwise around.

Signs

The 12 signs are divided into groups of Elements - Fire, Earth, Air and Water. Signs that share an element share similar qualities and traits.

The Zodiac signs show the characteristics that a planet takes on. Mars is the principle of energy and getting things done. Whichever sign Mars falls into shows the style Mars will adopt to get things done in your life. Angelina Jolie has Mars (action, energy and confidence) in Aries (self focussed, impulsive and enthusiastic). She does what she wants when she needs to. Mars in Aries is confident independence.

Planets

Each planet represents a different function of the psyche. They represent different desires inside you. Venus is the part of you that wants to connect with others and form relationships. Uranus is the part of you that wants to rebel and stand out from the crowd. Planets are like bolts of energy. Once you have a simple understanding of each planet, look to see what sign the planet falls in. The sign a planet falls in shows how you set about meeting that planet's basic urge or desire. Venus (relationships) in Gemini (witty, conversational) shows someone who uses their mind (Mercury) to flirt (Gemini) and build relationships (Venus).

Mars in Taurus (some specific info from 2005 + lots on Mars and Taurus in general)

Mars entered Taurus on July 29 2005. He will move forward until October 1^st when he appears to move backwards through the sky. From October 1^st to December 9^th Mars will be in reverse. On December 9 Mars will slowly turn around and start to move forward again, gradually picking up pace as he does. On February 18 2006 he will move out of Taurus.

Mars, planet of sex and war, spends an extra long time in the sign of the Bull this year (2005). The cycle of Mars takes him around the Sun every two years. His heavenly journey is punctuated by a 6 month retrograde period. In 2005/ 2006 Mars spends this entire retrograde phase in the one sign - Taurus. Mars normally spends just 6 weeks in each sign. Mars presence in the same sign for such a long time will strongly emphasise the traits of that sign (in this case Taurus) in a very Martian way.

A planet moving through a sign will have an especially strong effect on those that have planets in that sign - i.e. if your Sun Sign is Taurus or if you were born with Mars in Taurus. However, as this Mars in Taurus transit will set the astro climate for the period from July 2005 - February 2006 it will have an effect on us all as we go about expressing our desires and asserting our wants (Mars). What does Taurus Represent?

Taurus is the sign of pleasure and indulgence. Taurus is a Fixed Earth sign, which makes it one of the most in-the-moment signs in the Zodiac. Taurus is not in any hurry to get anywhere, he's quite happy enjoying the pleasures of the space he's in right now. Taurus is associated with the senses and it's in this sign more than any other that we seek pleasure and physical enjoyment. Taurus is connected to the delights of the body. In Taurus we like to eat well, drink well, be pampered and have plenty of time for relaxing. Taurus is known for endurance and persistence. Taurus likes to indulge in the finer things of life and a tendency to overspend is common with a strong Taurus influence. Material comfort can be confused with emotional support. In Taurus sometimes one is traded off for the other.
Remember, in your birth chart you have all the Zodiac Signs represented in some way, and some more strongly than others. It is possible that your dominant sign or planet may not be linked to your Sun Sign.

When a planet moves through a sign it takes on the qualities of that sign. When planets move through Taurus they S-L-O-W D-O-W-N. Almost to a complete stop. Remember in Taurus we are seeking enjoyment and pleasure - not something that happens when one rushes around. Taurus, being an Earth sign, relies heavily on the senses and practical reasoning. Due to its Fixed nature Taurus is very stubborn and determined. Resistance is strong and butting heads with Taurus is not likely to get you anything except a sore head!
Think of the Bull - the animal associated with Taurus. Bulls are hard to get moving and take a lot of prodding to get going. However, like the Bull, once you have irritated Taurus enough you'll find them charging. Once a bull charges you'd best get out of the way because it is very hard to stop them - Taurus is the same.

The concept of farming is also linked to Taurus - here we have a rhythmical and methodical approach. Taurus moves to its own beat which tends to be a little slower than the rest of us. The reason for this is Taurus really has a sense of "one step at a time". Like the farmers who in the first year till the ground, then through the second year grow a preparatory crop and finally 3 years later plant the crop they set out to sow. There is no need to rush with Taurus.
Taurus energy does need a little more time to get going. When dealing with people who have strong Taurus energy in their birth charts you are best advised to allow more time and not be in a hurry. Pushing a Taurus tends to create more resistance - they are stubborn! Taurus holds the space in the Zodiac where we reconnect with our bodies and senses, where we take time to enjoy physical pleasure and sensation and where we come to an understanding that there is a natural rhythm to growth and movement.

What are the characteristics of Mars?

A key word for Mars is energy. Astrologically Mars shows where and how we get our energy, what inspires us, what turns us on (physically and sexually). Mars also shows how good (or not) we are at getting angry. Mars is linked to desires and what we want. Mars in the birth chart shows what we want and how we go about getting it. Mars shows how we get our needs met. Mars derives many of his qualities from Ares, God of War. Key words for Ares/ Mars include brave, boisterous, selfish and competitive. Mars energises whatever sign he is in. Mars is active and likes to move. Mars is a masculine energy and in a woman's chart often represents the type of man she is attracted to. The drive of Mars is to survive. Mars is associated with combat - how we prove we are stronger or better than others in some way. Whatever sign Mars is in shows how you express anger (or not), what turns you on, what inspires and what motivates you. The sign placement of Mars shows what gets you moving. Whatever sign Mars is currently moving through shows what styles of energy are available to us all. Some of us will more easily relate to Mars in Taurus than others. The glyph for Mars is a round circle with an arrow pointing off (the same symbol used for male). Mars shows direction. Mars transits can encourage a change in direction or remind of us of another area of life we'd like to focus more time and energy on.

Mars in Taurus

Mars' extended passage through Taurus affects us all as it shows the energetic climate in which we are all trying to a get things done. Depending on what sign Mars' is in your birth chart will show how easy or difficult this energy will be for you personally.

We have a physical and desire focussed planet (Mars) in a slow and pleasure loving sign (Taurus). There are ways in which Mars in Taurus gels well (the pursuit of desire and through the physical connections) and there are ways in which Mars in Taurus doesn't gel so well (most obviously with movement - Mars is fast and Taurus is slow.)

Common interpretations for Mars in Taurus include a desire to pursue pleasure at all costs. The types of pleasure that are at the top of the list during this time are slow and sensual delights that indulge all the senses. If you are trying to seduce someone through this period a home cooked meal, a body massage or a slow and hot bath are all likely to be winners. On the flipside Mars wants action and he wants it now, whereas Taurus enjoys the build up, takes pleasure from foreplay, and the process of progressively easing oneself into a new state. There is an inner frustration with Mars in Taurus as the desire to move and act impulsive is curbed by Taurus' lets-take-it slow approach. During this extended period of Mars in Taurus, frustrations around sexual developments are likely as one person wants things to move more quickly than another. As you notice yourself getting inspired and enthused about new projects (Mars) you may run into stumbling blocks that delay and slow you down (Taurus). The will (Mars) is asked to stop, pause and take stock (Taurus) now. That affects us all. Mars also represents war and there may be a slowing down in the pace of global energy linked to some of the battles that are currently raging across the globe.
Under traditional Astrological models Mars is said to be in his detriment in Taurus. Mars is at home in the signs of Aries and Scorpio and least comfortable in the signs opposite those - Taurus and Libra. This extended passage of Mars occurs in a sign in which he is out of his comfort zone. Your normal methods of getting motivated, harnessing physical energy and staying inspired may desert you now. Mars, and the functions he represents (energy, motivation and desire) are not hitting the mark.

Conversely Mars is about physical energy and movement and Taurus is one sign that can endure. Physical feats that show a huge amount of drive and determination are possible now. When the desire strikes, Mars in Taurus creates an Astrological climate in which we can fanatically pursue goals. Mars in Taurus holds an innate awareness that success comes through hard work and there is a willingness now that encourages one to preserver and see things through. Taurus is slow to get moving, but Mars provides a fire and a drive to get the fires of passion burring. Once Taurus is up and running, like the Bull, the charge is unstoppable.
With Mars in Taurus there is a caution to not let one's appetites (for pleasure, security and sex) run away from them. Mars in Taurus is also known for entering into relationship for security over love. Be wary of this as you engage in a cosmic dance of sensuality with another through the Mars in Taurus period. It is a beautiful time for coming together to explore physical and emotional pleasure. Mars in Taurus wants at least either financial security or physical pleasure. Find a way to honour both these needs now without compromising one for the other.

As Mars also represents anger, in Taurus this can be a fierce and controlled anger that nothing can stop. Mars in Taurus is slow to temper, however once the pressure has reached boiling point you'll have an explosion of force like no other. Physical exercise is one way to diffuse the anger of Mars in Taurus - the other is through a sensual encounter.

Mars Retrograde

Mars moves through Taurus very second year. This year's transit is of special note as Mars spends an extra long time in Taurus (6 months versus his regular 6 weeks). The extra amount of time is due to a Retrograde phase.
Retrograde movement occurs as the speed of a planet in relation to the speed of the Earth changes. Just like when you are on a train pulling into a station, and another train moves past you at a faster speed, you feel like you are moving backwards. Astrologers know planets don't move backwards; what we are concerned with is how they appear from our vantage point here on earth.
Retrograde phases internalise a planet's energy, directing the focus inwards. Retrogrades are a time for reflecting, not a time for new movement. Retrograde planets turn their energy inwards and are often a little frustrated. Imagine if you were moving backwards - your frustration levels would build as you felt you weren't able to get anything tangible done. You'd likely get angry at all the energy you were expending only to have no movement whatsoever.
Whilst Mars moves in reverse irrational acts, outbursts of anger, frustration around lack of movement as well as delayed progress in one's intimate relationships are all possible. For many of us the sense of moving backwards (retrograde) around things we really want (Mars) is likely. The concept of treading water or having to hold one's ground is a good way to move through any Retrograde phase.
From one Mars Retrograde to another you may notice similar issues appearing in your life. What came up as a problem or frustration last time Mars was retrograde may reappear now. If Mars makes a Retrograde period through your sign (Star sign) you may experience a 3 month period where you seem to lose your inspiration, energy and motivation. Taking time to re-evaluate where you are heading and what you are doing is ideal if and when Mars Retrogrades through your sign.

Planetary Cycles and Relationships: Astrological insight into the rhythm of relationship

Ever wonder why so many of your relationships don't get past the 2 year mark? Or why when they do, the 7 year itch proves so challenging? Or are you envious of couples who are still going strong after 12 years of love and happiness? Planetary cycles can provide insight as to why specific anniversaries highlight certain issues in relationships. You will notice these cycles with partners of all kinds, including friends, business associates, acquaintances and family.

Each of the 10 planets, (including the Sun and Moon) has its own unique cycle. In cyclical work such as this we are most concerned with planetary cycles that complete in one life time. This excludes the outer planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto with their extended cycles.

The Sun

The Sun and Moon move almost too quickly to have a great effect. The Zodiac sign the Sun is in when the relationship begins indicates the tone or flavour of your relationship. When the Sun returns to where it was when the relationship started, 1 year has passed and you celebrate your anniversary. This return of the Sun is the "birthday" of your relationship and shows a time when creative energies of one person can support the other.

The Moon

The Moon's cycle is short covering the entire Zodiac every month. The Moon reflects emotions and shows the daily change of feeling. The phase of the Moon at the start of each relationship can give an indication of the emotional flow within the partnership.

The middle planets

The middle planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn), have cycles varying in length from 13 months to 29 years. They all make returns during an average lifetime. A planet is said to "return" when it moves completely through the sky from the point it was when you were born, or met that special someone, and returns again to that same point. For example, you might have begun a new relationship in May 2005 when Mars was in Pisces. Through April of 2007 your relationship birth chart would have experienced a Mars return as Mars passed again through Pisces.

During a planet's return themes and issues linked to that planet become more important in your relationship. Often you'll face dilemmas or opportunities tied up with the returning planets energy. A planet's return also provides a great time to start afresh in areas that planet rules, like the beginning of most cycles.
(NB these returns refer to the birth chart of the relationship, not of the individuals in the relationship.)

Mercury

Mercury has a cycle of approximately 1 year and is associated with communication, thought, speech, connection, bringing things together, conceptualizing and networking. The energy supporting the communication that brought the two of you together repeats around the 1 year mark. Think back to how you got through to that special someone when you first dated. Try some of those tactics again now. The chance to recapture that first spark of intelligence and depth of conversation that pulled you into another's orbit is possible. As Mercury returns, thoughts and conversations return to the same topics you discussed in the beginning. As you go over the same subjects, you bring the added level of depth and intimacy gained from a year together and can learn even more about your partner.
Communication now helps highlight areas of both strength and disappointment in your partnership. During this period spend time developing new communication skills and styles together. Problems may arise from a lack of understanding due to miscommunication or misunderstanding. Through a Mercury return it's important to talk to each other honestly. Open communication can help solve many problems that crop up now as you contemplate a second, third or fourth year together. If things are going well, you can harness the energy of Mercury to deepen the levels of communication between each and forge stronger ties of trust and understanding.

Venus

Venus takes about 13 months to move around the Sun and the period following a one-year anniversary is likely to be charged with Venusian themes. How do your two individuals relating styles differ? How do you show support for each other? How is love given or received? What values drive your relationship? How do you manage money, jointly or separately? Does this leave one of you paying more or do you split things 50/50? Common themes now relate to managing different values and expectations around pleasure and love. The Venus return offers a chance to reconnect with each other and harmonise your values around love and money. On a positive note, this can be a really affectionate and lovely time, as the romantic energy that brought the two of you together repeats. This means falling madly in love with your partner all over again is a real possibility now!

Mars

Most people are familiar with the "terrible twos" phase toddlers go through as they assert their independence and identity. Mars takes approx 2 years to complete a cycle and the assertion of independence at the 2 year mark can lead to power struggles. Every two years Mars returns to the position he was in at the start of the relationship and your relationship goes through its own version of the terrible twos!

Wilful, headstrong, aggressive and sexual energy shows its demanding face around the 2 year mark. If either of you feel as though the relationship has clipped your wings it's now, at the Mars return, that you'll need to reassert yourself. This can throw your relationship out of balance as roles change and power shifts. If you've been the passive partner it can be Mars' energy that encourages you to speak up more.

Hasty, rash and regrettable decisions can be made in a fit of anger. An increase in relationship energy now indicates it's time to find new goals to achieve either individually or as a couple. The trick is to direct this excess of energy into working together for the relationship, otherwise meltdown can happen quickly! What will be your focus be for the next two years now the initial passion has cooled? More energy devoted to physical pleasure and intimacy at this time can help you stay connected. Passion and anger are two sides of the same energy and you'll find you dance from one extreme to the other now.

Mars reflects how you assert yourself to ensure your needs are met, including sexual desires. Issues around "my" time versus "we" time can come up. Competitiveness may be a theme. Acknowledging each individuals need for personal space and alone time can ease relationship pressure. It's time for the relationship to strike out in some new direction. Find ways to allow each of you extra independence and space.

Jupiter

Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, takes 12 years to orbit the Sun. Every 12 years your relationship experiences a Jupiter Return. In keeping with Jupiter's size, his cycle is tied into "things getting bigger" that is, life gets a whole lot bigger and more demanding when Jupiter is active. Energetically this translates into more opportunity, more expansion and more love. This often manifests as the desire to broaden your horizons. Within the context of a relationship this provides opportunities for joint learning or travel. A couple's social life can get very hectic around the 12 year mark.

Jupiter is also associated with optimism and personal faith, so deepening your relationship through spiritual or philosophical pursuits is ideal. This can correlate to couples making a commitment of faith either through marriage or other significant life events (like parenthood).  Generally this is an abundant and lucky time in the relationship, however "things getting bigger" can also apply to some of the challenging aspects in the relationship, so don't avoid anything that requires work in your partnership now. Jupiter blesses you with a lot of faith and trust which will be beneficial to call on at this time. Jupiter loves anything new and foreign and the Jupiter phase every 12 years can bring up feelings of restlessness or thoughts of "the grass is greener" in one or both partners. The Jupiter Return time is a perfect period in which to fall in love again. Taking an extended holiday together or making a spiritually driven life change now are appropriate ways to honour Jupiter's energy. Your relationship will need more space, time and energy at Jupiter's return.

Saturn

Saturn is often given such a bad rap in Astrology. It's true he calls you to task if you're not holding up your end of the bargain. However he also gives you the tenacity to see things through, in good times and bad, which is essential for any long term relationship.
Saturn takes approximately 28 years to return to his original position in your relationship chart. During this period he will make 3 challenging aspects; the first after 7 years, the second at 14 years and the third at 21 years. The "seven year itch" can be attributed to these aspects within the Saturn cycle. Saturn reminds us, often through challenging experiences, exactly what our fears and limitations are. He also shows us how to survive our deepest fears when we must face them.

The Saturn cycle is about maturing and growing. These things occur over time and Saturn is not one to rush. Responsibilities must be accepted and honoured. Achievement is obvious only with the passing of time.  During Saturn periods (at the 7 yr, 14 yr and 21 yr mark) your relationship can seem difficult and barren. Through these periods you are unconsciously asked to work through difficulties and take stock of all you've achieved together. Saturn requires you to honour commitments and promises even when the going gets tough. The other face of Saturn is the diligence and sense of enduring commitment that enables you to keep working at your relationship even during the challenging times.

Saturn phases in relationships are periods of re-evaluating and re-committing. Common events during Saturn phases include the struggle to find space for an intimate relationship within the demanding role of parenting or professional responsibilities; the juggle/struggle to make ends meet financially and separations due to work or other family commitments (i.e. ill parents).

The Saturn return phase of a relationship (around the 29^th year) is a time when the boundaries in your partnership need to be redefined. Typically at this time, roles within the union change.

The planetary cycles can remind us of the undercurrents of our relationships. As cycles repeat, you have a chance to reconnect with the energy that conspired to bring you into the orbit of that special someone in the first place. The planets' themes highlight how you can keep the flame alive even after many years of being together. Their cycles also offer solutions for the way through challenges that may arise within your relationship. Having an awareness of what is prompting your trusted partner's sudden display of anger or discomfort, for example, can help make a difficult time merely a rough patch rather than an ending.

At times, it's necessary to reaffirm your feelings for your partner. Remembering how and why you feel in love with them in the first place can help to forge stronger ties for the future. On the other hand, in a relationship that's not working, the planetary cycles might remind you that you were full of lust when Cupid's arrow struck, and moving on might be the best thing.

What is the meaning of the Moon in the birth chart?

The Moon represents feelings and emotions. Like the Moon in the sky reflecting the Sun's light, the Moon in the birth chart is reflective, soulful and sensitive. The Moon represents the instinctive, intuitive part of you. When you respond without thinking, almost as if driven by primal instinct, that is the Moon acting in your life. The Moon is also a symbol for mother and by sign shows what you need to feel nurtured. Aspects, (lines of energy), from other planets to the Moon describe your relationship to "Mum", plus shows how well you understand your own emotional needs or not as the case may be.

How does the Moon affect our path through life?

The Moon influences in a subtle yet meaningful way. Decisions that aren't necessarily logical or explainable, but are intrinsically important, are Moon based decisions. The Moon craves safety, security and comfort and the unique path to create these qualities in our lives is described by the Moon. The Moon, being an inner, yin and subjective energy doesn't need external achievements; instead it's the quiet moments with loved ones, in places that are familiar to us, that bring the Moon most joy. The Moon is the unspoken guiding force that craves emotional attachment and a sense of safety. The sign, house and aspects of the Moon describe the unique experience of "home," safety and connection for you.

Does it affect us on a daily basis?

The Moon moves through the entire sky (and therefore the whole birth chart) once every 28 days, changing signs about every 48hours. As the Moon moves through the Zodiac she makes a unique passage through your birth chart. When the Moon moves through your 1^st house you think about yourself; when the Moon is moving through your 7^th House you think about those you love. The Moon affects everyone on a daily basis but in different ways. Her movement around the sky (and the birth chart) is like the second hand on a clock ticking off 48 hour intervals that highlight different areas (via the houses) of your life.

Dose the phase of the Moon affect us?

Yes. The phase of the Moon you are most affected by is the Moon phase you were born under. I.e. if you were both when the Sun and Moon are opposite (at a Full Moon) then every month you will be extra sensitive and highly fertile (both physically and creatively) at the Full Moon. Find out what Moon phase you were born under and watch as you notice the extra inspiration that is on offer to you at that time each month.

Pluto: Planet or Not? A piece written for The Tree Magazine

The planet Pluto made headlines recently when it was demoted from full planet status. This name change doesn't alter the fact that Pluto is still out there, but what happens in astrology when a new planet is discovered (like Pluto in 1930 or Neptune in 1846)? Did Pluto's discovery mean that all horoscopes prior to 1930 were suddenly void? What about the discovery of new "dwarf planets" and asteroids like Ceres? Do they have the same impact on astrology as new planets?

Pluto has been the subject of hot debate recently as the International Astronomical Union (IAU) reclassified their definition of a planet. Historically astrology and astronomy were intimately linked, with practitioners of one being experts in the other. Through the renaissance period cracks in the relationship between astronomy and astrology started to show. Since that time debate has raged about the validity of astrology with astronomers claiming the science trump card. The basic premise of astrology is to observe the sky and attribute meaning to what's seen in the heavens in accords with what happens at the same time here on Earth. I.E The Moon moves the tides, up and down. We observe this. Meaning is then attributed to the Moon that covers fluctuations, moodiness, ebbs and flows. The Moon has no light of her own; we observe her reflecting the light of the Sun. The Moon is then linked to receptiveness. It's really quite simple!

Ancient cultures observed the night sky and noted that most stars were fixed, yet a few seemed to move against the backdrop of other stars. The term planet referred to these "wandering stars". The Heinemann Australian Dictionary defines a planet as "any body that does not produce light and revolves around a star." That covers almost everything in the sky except the sun. These definitions are now too broad to clearly classify the rapidly increasing number and types of different rock bodies that exist. Recent resolutions on the definition of a planet were the first clear specifications set out by the IAU. There are now 3 types of orbiting bodies, classified according to their size, shape and affect on their immediate area. Much debate has raged (astronomically) about Pluto's status since he was discovered in 1930. His super small shape and irregular orbit cast him as an anomaly when compared with other planets.

Over the past few years a number of bodies have been discovered beyond Neptune, collectively known as Trans-Neptunian's. Like in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter there are thousands of Trans-Neptunian's, with more being discovered all the time. Trans-Neptunian's orbit in what's known as the Kuiper Belt (coincidentally where Pluto orbits). Continuing advancements in technology mean we can now see previously "invisible" smaller bodies further out into the solar system, like those in the Kuiper Belt. The IAU could be seen to simply be moving with the times in reaching their recent resolution on the definition of a planet. (NB Only a small percentage of the registered members in the union voted - less than 500 out of over 2700.) As more and more bodies are discovered, more precise methods of classification will be needed, at least for the astronomical community.

How does all this affect astrology? In short it doesn't. Astrologers leapfrog on the back of astronomers to grab the latest cosmic discoveries. Once the cycle of the new body is clarified (astrologers need this for predictive purposes) astrologers hot foot it back to their workshops to integrate the new body. There is no one person or body in astrological circles that decides what a new body is called or means. In fact naming rights go to the discovering astronomer. Once a planet has been christened (usually with some Greek, Roman or Egyptian deity) the myths relating to that character are mulled over by astrologers around the world. Astrologers have free reign to add meaning to new bodies. It's quite a magical process observing astrologers in different places coming up with similar themes and concerns for each new planet (dwarf or otherwise). It matters little to astrologers how astronomers define new bodies; if it's out there, it has an influence, regardless of its formal status (according to the basic premise of astrology).

Ceres, along with many other bodies of rock orbiting between Mars and Jupiter, is known astrologically as an asteroid. Ceres, (one of the biggest asteroids) was discovered early in the 19^th century. Ceres is used in conjunction with a number of other prominent asteroids (including Chiron) by specialist asteroid astrologers. Asteroids are primarily feminine and one theory states that the emerging use of asteroids in astrological practice is a nod to the re-emergence of the feminine powers in society.

In the 70 odd years since Pluto's discovery easy consensus has formed (amongst astrologers) around the myths and qualities Pluto carries. Looking back in time, the themes attributed to Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were symbolic of the events and changes occurring in the world at the time of their discovery. Uranus was discovered in 1781 during periods of great civil unrest in many countries around the world. In astrology today Uranus is about unexpected, but needed, change. His keyword is disruption. Neptune's discovery in 1846 came through the middle of the Victorian era, where romanticism ran rampant. Fashions were becoming a focus and creative and spiritual movements gathered momentum. Neptune is linked to fantasy, creativity and the pursuit of the divine. Pluto's discovery in 1930 came as the world discovered nuclear power and the concept of world wide destruction entered the consciousness. Pluto represents the process of complete transformation, like death and rebirth.

As new planets are discovered they are added into the astrological body of knowledge. A new discovery doesn't mean previous horoscopes are null and void. A comprehensive understanding of the original 7 planets allows a professional astrologer to create very detailed horoscopes; the addition of new bodies only serves to clarify what already exists in astrological symbolism.

It's hard to say what influence new dwarf planets will have on the future of astrology. There are as many different theories on this as there are astrologers. Like any profession astrology has a conservative mainstream plus extreme branches on the left and right. There will always be a pocket of astrologers committed to the original 7 planets, a mainstream group that incorporates key new bodies (like major dwarf planets and asteroids) and an alternative branch who will use every little piece of cosmological rock they can get their hands on. In the wider astrological community new bodies and planets (of all sizes) will be embraced. Astrologers generally stay informed about new developments even if they choose not to use them personally.

As a lay person heading off for a reading, or a budding astrologer beginning studies, you can rest assured that in whichever form astrology presents it self to you, your teacher or astrologer has up to date information about the planets (dwarf or otherwise) they use. New bodies will continue to be discovered at increasing rates as technology continues to advance. The process of integrating new energies into astrology takes time and emerges from group discussion, taking into account all that's happening in the world at the time of their discovery. The rocks that rock easily stand the test of time and their astrological myths will remain in place for centuries.

Saturn "Magnificent Saturn" 

"For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted." Ecclesiastes 3:1-2

Saturn demands discipline and concentrated effort. In the birth chart Saturn represents the part of you capable of planning and providing for the future. Saturn is linked to achievement over time. He works from within to encourage you to create tangible results in your life. Saturn is happy when you have security in different areas of life and respect for what you do. Everyone has a unique relationship to Saturn depending on the Zodiac Sign and House of Saturn and any aspects he makes to other planets in our birth chart. Who is Saturn and what does he represent?

Astronomically Saturn is the last heavenly body you can see with your naked eye. Until the discovery of Uranus in 1781 Saturn represented the boundary of the solar system. It took technology and the developments of science to take us as a human race beyond the bounds of Saturn's realm. This concept of "boundaries" is integral to understanding Saturn in the birth chart. Saturn describes how you create boundaries. What is a boundary? It is a definitive separation of one thing from another. I am separate from you; we have different bodies. Saturn appears in both Greek and Roman myths. In Greece he is Cronos, Father of Time, and represents time both seasonally and globally. The Saturn Cycle

Saturn's orbit is circular and his 28 yr cycle can be broken down into 4 x 7 year phases. Ever heard of the 7 year itch? Astrologers understand this commonly accepted phenomenon through the testing energy of Saturn re-emerging in your life every 7 years. Your personal Saturn cycles coincide with returns around 29 and 58, however our lives are punctuated by random Saturn periods depending on our personal birth chart.* If you are going through a difficult time now, think back to the choices and decisions you made 7 years before. First Saturn Return 29

The first Saturn return at 29 symbolises the transition from child to adult astrologically.
